"The
Bare Truth--Stars of Burlesque"
by Len Rothe
Schiffer Publishing, 1998
The 40's and 50's were
the golden age of burlesque and the striptease. Any night spot that was
worth its salt had their own headliner bumping and grinding her way across
stage. It was this time that the seediness of the strip was replaced by
a bit of the old Hollywood star glamour. The burlesque dance became an
art form and the women became "the stuff dreams are made of." It was the
era of the tease. This book calls itself a "pictorial essay" of that era
featuring over a hundred pages of promotional photos of the famous and
the unknown of the era. Not every dancer featured in this book is beautiful,
but they are all glamorous (and in that era glamour went a long way). These
are soft-lit professional photos that hint at sexuality without giving
anything away. These photos are a little more formal and less spontaneous
than your ordinary pin-up photos. These were advertisements rather than
magazine pictorials much like photos bands or actors take to send to potential
clubs/clients. Some of the strippers you'll recognize in here are major
headliners Lili St. Cyr (who was the
epitome of burlesque glamour), Tempest Storm,
and star of Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!
Tura Satana.
