Backstage Trio"Backstage Trio"
by Allyn Davis
Wee Hours Books, 1967
There is no back cover text, so let's pull a passage from the book: "'Robert Cavanaugh has the large cabin down the road. He's finishing a new play for me to produce this fall...' Leah said.
'That's no secret--it was even in the papers,' Dexter added. "New York papers, theatre section..."
     'Aren't you interested?' she demanded.
'Look, Leah, you could have called on me all summer--I could have used you last night. I'm just wondering why now?' the skeptical voice of Dexter vibrated out to Terry. "The kid toss you over for someone else?'
'I don't get tossed--and I'll be doing the casting of this play,' Leah retorted.
'So? You want me to play with?' he questioned with a smirk.
'Not for me,' Leah responded quickly.
     'What?' Dexter was dumbfounded.
'We've got a problem with the backing--more money is needed. And, the Franconi's have plenty of money--they love investing in the theatre...'
'Which Franconi you want me to love?' Dexter flipped.
'I don't give a damn--both of them--if you have to. But I'd start with Rite--she's interested in you...' Leah snapped.
'And--if I get them to come across with the money, you come across with the part?' he leveled.
'Exactly,' she laughed. "You're a smart boy!"
Granted, this book falls more into the "sleaze" category rather than the usual "tawdry" paperbacks featured here, but Backstage Trio is well worth noting if nothing else but its amazing cover. (For a good explanation of sleaze versus tawdry, check out this write-up from the Lurid Paperback of the Week website.) As with most sleaze, the title and cover picture has almost nothing to do with the story. The only connection (albeit a loose one) is that this is a story is about a touring summer stock theatre ensemble. Even though Backstage Trio is collection of bedroom capers, no where is there mentioned a woman in a  bat suit (much to our disappointment). Out of all the tawdry paperback that have made their way to  Java's Bachelor Pad, this batwoman cover is the most outrageous. Pulp paperbacks artwork can get away with a lot, but this takes the prize. Here we get into the realm of some serious devil horns & tail/bat wing/leather fetishism. Not your ordinary kink by any means. Most sleaze paperback tend to go past the point of good taste, but seldom leave you scratching your head wondering what the hell the artist was thinking.
