"Christmas on Big Island"
The Blue Hawaiians, 1995
It's
Christmas time again, and we here at the Bachelor Pad are getting into
the holiday spirit with seasonal tunes courtesy of The Blue Hawaiians.
Not many of use have had the luxury of spending Christmas on the big islands,
so with this disc the tropical and exotic sounds of the yule are brought
to us.
Christmas on Big Island takes holiday standards (like
"White Christmas," "Blue Christmas," and the Hawaiian masterpiece "Mele
Kalikimaka") and serves them up tiki-style. They also have also taken some
other holiday classics and put a bit of a slack guitar spin on them. These
are not your parent's Hawaiian tunes. Granted it's not that authentic either.
By the sounds of this disc, The Blue Hawaiians have done
their musical research and have created a sounds that is modern stylistic
rendering of all those great Hawaiian/tropical/exotica tunes. For example,
there's a tune they call "Have Yourself A Quiet Little Christmas" which
echoes much of Martin Denny's "Quiet Village"
while still keeping their own distinct voice. They also have a bit of fun
with tunes like "We Three Kings" giving it some serious drumming (ala the
tune "Wipeout"). As a nice added surprise, they start the album with "Christmas
Time Is Here" from the "Peanuts Christmas Special."
