"Cocktails with Joey"
Joey Altruda, 1995
L.A.
swinger
Joey Altruda was born about 40 years too late. Within
him burns the soul of a true lounge bandleader. All the songs on this CD
are done with full orchestration and true to the classic style. Most of
the works on "Cocktails with Joey" are original material written by Altruda
himself. They pay homage to all the great style and great composers. Altruda
gravitates a lot to the big, stylized pop sound of Mancini,
first with a tune called "A Martini for Mancini" and then a cover of Mancini's
"The Brother's go to Mother's." He also explores the bossa nova sounds
of Jobim, Martin Denny-esque
jungle exotica, and Esquivel's
groovy swing, as well as classic mambos and espionage scores. In the purest
sense of the term, Altruda is, bar none, the best lounge
composer active today. Whereas most modern loungers let their music fall
into self parody, Altruda stays true to form.
