"The Contender"
Royal Crown Revue, 1998
Royal
Crown Revue is one of the bands that
really helped make the retro-swing movement as popular as it is. If you
like that hard boiled swing, then these are the guys for you. Royal
Crown Revue's music is brassy, slick and will pound your ass if
you step outta line. Their sound is classic swing with great touches of
jump blues, early R&B, and old standards. It's like the sound of Louis
Jordan with the attitude of the Clash. This album
is the follow-up to their very popular
Mugzy's Move, that had the
song "Hey Pachuco!" which, along with the band, was in the Jim Carrey vehicle
The Mask and has since been in just about every movie trailer in
the last two years. This disc throws a hard jab right at the ol' kisser,
with some great new tunes like the title track and "Walking Like Brando;"
some great covers like "Stormy Weather" and the Dizz classic "Salt Peanuts;"
and "Zip Gun Bop," a remix from their last album.
