"Divas Exotica"
Various Artists, 1998
There
was a time when a woman who thought she was a femme fatale figured she
could be diva on all levels--stage, screen, and song. Unfortunately, the
song part of the equation was the weakest of the links, but lucky for us
these bits of history have not been lost. The people of Capitol records,
(one of the best sources for classic hi-fi music, since it was on the Capitol
label that most of this music was originally released on), have dug through
their library to create this collection. Not to say all the women on this
album should have stuck to the day jobs--there are some actual singers
here. Some sing signature songs, such as Carmen Miranda's
"Mama eu Quero" and the James Bond theme "Goldfinger" by Shirley
Bassey, and other are novelty songs by the likes of Josephine
Baker, with "Don't Touch My Tomatoes," and Billie Holiday,
with "Do You Duty." But then there are those strange gems from beauties
who thought they could coo and purr their way to a hit record, like Jayne
Mansfield's "That Makes It," Mamie
Van Doren "Go, Go, Calypso," and Sophia
Loren "Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo." So, for all you divas-in-training
or lovers of diva-ness, Divas Exotica is a good way to do
you diva homework.
