"Girlie
Collectibles"
by Leland and Crystal Payton
St. Martin's Griffin, 1996
Girlie Collectibles
is a great, small coffee table book that features some great pictures of
20th century girlie-themed kitsch: nudie ashtrays, pin-up playing cards,
female form shaped mugs, provocative slat and pepper shakers, and much
more. The real theme of this book, though, is not just the collecting of
these items, but using them to take pot shots at the 1990's phenomenon
known as political correctness. As the cover warns: "This junk is industrial-strength
sexist and not for those who suffer from HHD (Humor Deficit Disorder)."
The items show within the pages of Girlie Collectibles include
captions that put them in their P.C. place. A good example is this write-up
for something called a "Breast Mug": "6" tall, ceramic. We've seen this
classic in all sizes and ethnicities. This one just happens to represent
the mammary of a person of the mutant albino genetic recessive global
minority. They are still being made and distributed by novelty companies
(described in their catalogs as: SEXY DRINKING MUG for the macho male.
Drink from this genuine ceramic 'boobie' mug.) A fair amount are out of
home ceramic molds and are frequently gifts from the domestic incarceration
survivors (wives) who made them for their legalized rapists
(husbands). $16.50."
