"Holy Roller"
The Rev. Horton Heat, 1999
There
are very few artists that could make psychobilly a religious experience,
but the Rev. Horton Heat's music will make you fall to your
knees and thank god above for these hard-driving, guitar-and-whiskey-filled
tunes.
The Rev. Horton Heat delivers the goods when it comes
to sex, sin, and rock and roll (which to him seem one and the same). Holy
Roller is a 24 track greatest hits epic spanning Heat's career
from his early day on Sub Pop Records, to his middle career when he was
produced by Ministry's
Al Jourgensen, and his current back-to-rockabilly-basics
recordings.
Heat has been able to take rockabilly and infuse
it with a punk aesthetic creating a stylized musical creature that can
appeal both to western swinger and indie rock Gen X'ers. Heat
is to psychobilly what Bob Marley was to reggae and Mozart
was to classical music. If anyone can bring psychobilly to the forefront
of pop culture,
Heat is the man. (In fact, Heat's
tune "Big Red Rocket Of Love" was recently used for a television commercial.)
All in all, Holy Roller is the perfect music for those bachelors
are looking for something to kick start their cocktail parties. No sleepy
Jackie
Gleason tunes here.
