"Liquored Up and Lacquered Down"
Southern Culture on the Skids,
2000
A
new release from Southern Culture on the Skids is always
cause for celebration here at Java's Bachelor Pad. If you've
never heard of them before (for shame!), they're a musical mix of white
trash sensibilities with soul grooves and surf guitar flourishes. They
use elements of swamp boogie, mexican fuzz guitar, juke joint blues, and
a healthy dash of twang. Over the years,
SCOTS
(as they like
to be called) have covered topics such as moon pies, banana pudding, dirt
track races, and general back-woods living. Their latest album, "Liquored
Up and Lacquered Down" adds to the list songs about moonshine,
big hair, cheap motels, and dancing in tin shacks in Mississippi. SCOTS
is more about southern charm than southern clichés. There is always
a wink and a nod in their music that lets everyone know they and you are
in on the white trash jokes.
SCOTS keep their sounds fresh
by trading vocals between
Rick Miller's cornbread growl and
Mary
Huff's dance hall holler. Every once in an while, you also can
catch them doing guitar heavy instrumentals ala Link Wray
and Dick Dale. All in all, this is music that was made to
groove you from one end of the trailer park to the other. Jerry Springer,
eat your heart out.
