Most of the Femme Fatales featured here are usually
starlets, pin-up models or burlesque dancers, but this time around we feature
one of the best female cocktail/lounge singers ever. Julie London's
smoky,
sultry voice (backed by just guitar and bass) set the standard for torch
singers for decades to come. Her first album Julie Is Her Name
(1955), featuring the standard "Cry Me A River," made her an instant star
for both jet setters and jazz lovers. Besides her singing career (which
included numerous albums), London is also known for her marriage
to Jack Webb (of "Dragnet" fame); a short, but critically
acclaimed, Hollywood movie career; and a starring role in the 1970's TV
show "Emergency." If anyone doubted her inclusion as a Femme Fatale,
they need only look at the pin-up shots she made for the cover of 1956
album Calendar Girl. But first and foremost she is a great
singer.
Don't forget to read our review of her debut
album Julie Is Her Name.
