"Surfin' Senorita: A Tribute"
Various Artists, 1999
For
some people, Herb Alpert is a
god among men. Most collectors would agree that
"Whipped
Cream and Other Delights" has one of the best album covers
of all times, but it takes a certain breed to live and die by the tones
of the Tijuana Brass. It's true that back to the 1960's, no self-respecting
game show would be caught dead without one of Alpert's tunes
as its theme song, but over time those swinging brass melodies of his have
lost favor with the music listening crowd. "Surfin' Senorita" tries
to change all that by bringing back those well known songs and giving them
a fresh interpretation. This disc features people who in their other lives
just happen to be in surf guitar bands (like Satan's Pilgrims,
Space
Cossacks, and the Sandblaster). Granted, it's a strange
mix of Albert's south-of-the-border horn-heavy riffs combined
with the reverb-drenched twang guitar, but surprisingly the two styles
make for a satisfying listen.
"Surfin' Senorita" has made
is safe for a new generation to bring those Alpert records
out of hiding and to proclaim once again that the Tijuana Brass
is the only way to go for your swinging lifestyle. Here are some real audio
samples from "Surfin' Senorita": "A
Taste of Honey" by Halibuts, "Spanish
Flea" by Sir Finks, and "Tijuana
Taxi" by Donna Ho.
