"Tijuana
Bibles"
by Bob Adelman
Simon & Schuster, 1997
Tijuana Bibles, for
those who never heard of them, were very small, very bawdy, crudely drawn
underground comics that had its heyday from the 1930's to the 1950's. These
were the under-the-counter funnies that grandfathers across the country
kept hidden in their desk drawers. It was a combination of satire, parody,
and X-rated humor. They featured popular comic strip characters and/or
popular people of the time in quick, explicit escapades. It was the work
of unknown amateur artists who either wanted to take jabs at pop culture
icons or just titillate a eager audience. But regardless of the motive,
Tijuana Bibles became a staple of the modern man "stag" culture and, nowadays,
a highly sought after collectable. This book features "bibles" starring
Mutt and Jeff, Popeye, Mickey Mouse, Mae West, Cary Grant, Lou Gehrig,
Al Capone, and dozens of others as well as an enlightening introduction/essay
by Art Spiegelman, cartoonist of the critically acclaimed series
Maus.
