"Everything
Is Under Control"
by Robert Anton Wilson with
Miriam Joan Hill
Harper Perennial, 1998
Robert Anton Wilson,
as most know, is best known for his 1970's "Illuminatus!"
trilogy written with Robert Shea. Since then, he has been the man to turn
to when you need to know the low-down on conspiracy theories. Everything
Is Under Control is an encyclopedic collection of all major conspiracies,
secret societies, and other weirdness-that-has-yet-to-be-explained. Usually,
A-to-Z books of this type are dry and academic, but Wilson keeps things
going with personal observations and short explanations of his own
pet theories. Wilson helps to prove that whoever or whatever you think
is running the world--whether it's the Freemasons, The Priory of
Sion, The Trilateral Commission, the Men in Black, the Church
of the SubGenius, or the UFO's in Area 51--you're not alone. Have your
own take on the JFK assassination? Compare notes with the numerous entries
in this book. Have you suspicion about the origins of the Illuminati? Get
all the "facts" right here. This book strikes a nice balance between the
paranoid and the skeptical. Also, Wilson does a great job of citing references,
both in print and on the web. "Everything is Under Control"
is a great springboard and cheat sheet for any and all conspiracies you
might fancy. Just remember this: "They" might be after you or maybe
"they" are not--and maybe, just maybe, you don't know who "they" even are,
are who you thought "they" are not really "them" at all. (See how this
logic dips into the absurd.) Conspiracy theory seems to be the most popular
whodunit of the modern era. Why do you think the X-Files is still such
a popular show? People love a good mystery, and the larger the mystery,
the more fun it is.
