Raquel
Welch is one of those Femme Fatales that was born
a decade too late. She had the voluptuous qualities of some of the best
glamour gals, but in the mid-60's that really didn't cut it anymore. But
Welch,
despite the times, did become and still is a Hollywood sex symbol. She
was brassy and sultry as a Jayne Mansfield
or Marilyn Monroe, but, because
of the times, no longer needed to base her personality on a coquettish
demeanor. She could be outright sexy, which up until then was strictly
the role of foreign film stars (ala Brigitte
Bardot). Throughout her career, most of her performances has
been as eye candy--and what eye candy she is! Who can forget one of her
early role as the fur wearing cavewoman in One Million Years, B.C.
(1966). Another big film for Welch was the cult favorite
Myra
Breckinridge (1970) which also starred a very aged Mae
West and an unknown named Farrah Fawcett. Besides
those actresses, Welch
has acted alongside the likes of Richard
Burton, James Stewart, Frank Sinatra,
Marcello
Mastroianni, and Bill Cosby. Welch,
over the decades, has tried her hand at everything: stage, screen, tv,
and publishing (fitness and beauty books). She still remains one of the
last of the old school glamour queens.
Update: A collection of
Welch's
movies (One Million Years B.C., Bandolero!, Myra Breckinridge, Mother,
Jugs & Speed, Fathom) has been released as a five DVD collector's set.
